Garter Springs
Custom Garter Spring Supplier
Garter springs are generally made from carbon steel or stainless steel round wire and are formed similarly to standard extension and compression springs, except for the two ends' connection. Compression garter spring design creates a contracting force similar to a rubber band and is often used to hold items together. In contrast, extension garter springs make an expanding force and are often used to create a seal. Garter springs are used in industries including aerospace, industrial, and oil and gas. Common applications include electrical connectors, motion control, climate control, pneumatics, filtration, fluid and gas handling, sealing, and shielding.
These springs come in a few different types, including compression garter springs and extension garter springs. The difference between the two versions is the direction of the force exerted. Compression garter springs exert force outward, while extension garter springs exert force inward.

Featured Use Case: Garter Springs for Oil & Gas
In the oil and gas industry, garter springs play a crucial role in sealing and compression applications, often as part of downhole equipment. These springs are circular, helical components that exert radial pressure, or garter springs with hooked ends that help secure seals and reduce leakage under challenging conditions.
The durability, flexibility, and ability to maintain pressure across large temperature and pressure variations make garter springs valuable in the oil and gas sector, where equipment reliability and safety are paramount.
Seals in Downhole Tools
Garter springs provide continuous force around seals (like O-rings or lip seals), ensuring they stay in contact with the surrounding surfaces even when exposed to fluctuating temperatures, pressure, and chemical exposure. This helps maintain a reliable barrier, preventing oil, gas, or other materials from escaping or leaking into unintended areas.
Hydraulic Pumps and Motors
Within hydraulic equipment, garter springs are used in the seals and piston rings to keep fluids confined within specific chambers. They maintain consistent pressure in high-temperature environments, ensuring system efficiency and reducing equipment downtime.
Rotary Equipment
These springs are used to keep seals in place on rotating shafts or in reciprocating (back-and-forth motion) equipment. They keep the sealing elements securely in contact with the surfaces, especially critical in equipment like compressors, pumps, and valves, where any leakage could lead to system failure or safety hazards.
Packers and Expandable Tools
Garter springs are also used in packers, tools designed to isolate sections of a wellbore, and in expandable tubulars, which are sometimes expanded downhole to maintain well integrity. They help keep elastomeric seals firmly in place, enhancing their effectiveness in sealing off sections as they expand and contract with the varying downhole conditions.
