Large Torsion Springs

At Greer: Springs, we specialize in manufacturing torsion springs that deliver precision and durability. Torsion springs are helical coils engineered to store and release rotational energy by applying torque. Unlike compression or extension springs, torsion springs work through bending stresses, producing a controlled twisting force in compact spaces.

When it comes to demanding applications, large torsion springs and heavy duty torsion springs provide the strength and reliability required to manage high torque loads, long duty cycles, and tough operating environments. These springs are critical in heavy machinery, industrial equipment, and applications where dependable performance under extreme conditions is non-negotiable.

As a custom spring manufacturer, our production capabilities are varied and include hot and cold wound springs in bar diameters up to 3" (hot wound). We also work with you to manufacture springs to your exact specifications. Our facility offers advanced manufacturing using state-of-the-art equipment, in-house coating, and proven quality through ISO 9001 certification.Ìý

How Torsion Springs Work

Torsion springs function by winding tighter as torque is applied—they should never unwind from their free position. The direction of the coil is determined by the direction of the applied force, ensuring proper function within the assembly.

As torque increases, the spring’s diameter naturally decreases. This characteristic is especially important for large torsion springs and heavy duty torsion springs, where clearance between the support shaft and the spring’s inside diameter must be carefully maintained. To allow for this change in dimension, torsion springs are often designed with a slight gap between coils, preventing binding and ensuring smooth operation.

End Designs & Customization

The ends of a torsion spring can be formed in a variety of shapes to fit different mounting requirements. Straight tails are the simplest design, but specialized angles and bends may be needed depending on the application. In the case of heavy duty torsion springs, end configurations must be engineered with precision to effectively transfer force and withstand high stress without compromising longevity.

At Greer: Springs, we design and manufacture torsion springs in a wide range of sizes and configurations, from precision parts to large industrial torsion springs engineered for maximum strength. Every spring is custom-built with the correct torque capacity, stress limits, and end configuration to ensure reliable performance and long fatigue life.
